The aim of this special journal issue is to reflect on NATO’s deterrence policy and measures implemented since the 2014 NATO Wales Summit and analyze the Brussels Summit’s decisions of July 2018 and their political and military implications for strengthening the deterrence capabilities against the revanchist Russian Federation, with account of the hybrid toolset it continuously implements.
We invite authors:
- to assess the sufficiency of NATO’s deterrence measures and the required national capabilities of the Eastern allies to contribute to these common efforts
- to analyze options for strengthening the national and multinational efforts
- to suggest steps the Alliance should undertake in order to neutralize the widening military imbalance with the Russian Federation in the Eastern allied area of responsibility and the Black Sea in view of the accelerated militarization of the Crimea peninsula coupled with the intensive build-up of the Russian Naval forces
- to analyze the options for partner countries and modalities for NATO-partner cooperation in the face of hybrid threats
- to assess the consequences of the potential US and/or Russia’s withdrawal from the INF Treaty.
