Abstract:

This article critically evaluates NATO’s evolving deterrence posture in response to contemporary Russian aggressive policy, drawing lessons from Cold War-era strategy. While NATO’s strategic adaptation since 2014 reflects a renewed recognition of the Russian threat, the current forward-deployed forces on the Eastern Flank, particularly in the Baltic states, remain insufficient for credible deterrence by denial. The article contrasts the robust, multidivisional Cold War defense architecture along the inter-German border with the fragmented and under-resourced forces along today’s NATO-Russia frontier. Emphasizing the primacy of conventional deterrence in an era of constrained nuclear options and the inefficiency of non-military deterrence tools, it argues that NATO must accelerate its transformation by significantly increasing ready forces, enhancing logistical support, and sustaining high levels of defense investment. Without substantial in-place capabilities, NATO risks appearing vulnerable to Russian fait accompli strategies and undermining the credibility of its collective defense commitments.
